Jacob Coffing, Sr.

Coverlets (Coverlid) are woven bedcovers, used as the topmost covering on a bed.

Jacob Coffing, Sr. was born about 1665 in England. He was a weaver.

On June 23, 1686, Jacob arrived in Pennsylvania on the ship Desire from Plymouth England with James Cook as commander. Jacob was listed as weaver James Shattock's, servant. They were on the same ship as Quaker leaders, Francis Rawie and James Fox and other Friends who were from Plymouth, Devonshire, England.

His wife was named Sarah. Their children may have included:

Jacob Coffing, Jr. (1700),
Howard Coffing (1705, died young),
Sarah Coffing (1706, died young)
William Coffing (1710), and
Abraham Coffing (1712).

In 1693, Jacob was taxed 6 shillings in Philadelphia County.

On October 3, 1696, he bought land from Robert Turner in Philadelphia County.

On February 18, 1698 he bought land from John Colley in Philadelphia County.

On June 6, 1698 he was listed in a deed from Samuel Atkins in Philadelphia County

On October 11, 1700 he witnessed John Bolt's will in Philadelphia County.

On Septemper 2, 1701 he was on a jury in Philadelphia County.

On October 20, 1701 he bought a plantation in Gloucester County, New Jersey.

Do. Edward Smout, yeoman, to Jacob Coffing, clothier, both of Philadelphia, for a plantation of 500 acres in Gloucester Co., W. J., on the South side of the South branch of Gloucester River, N. W. John and Samuel Dennis, S. E. Thomas Bull. 39

On August 31, 1703 he was listed in a deed to C. Cash in Philadelphia County.

On April 21, 1704 he bought land in Cheltenham.

Whereas, William James, of Cheltenham, yeoman,
by deed poll [ a deed made and executed by only one party]
dated 21 April 1704,
granted to said Jacob Coffing his plantation and tract in Cheltenham,
adj. Everard Bolton, John Songhurst, John Day, William Brown;
cont. 200 acres,
part of 500 acres granted by one William Brown and John Bertles to Patrick Robinson, who sold same to Thomas Stanford, who sold same to William James, who sold same to Jacob Coffing, who now conveys said 200 acres.

Sarah died before November 15, 1704.

On August 8, 1705 he sold land to Martin Jervis in Philadelphia County.

In 1706 he bought land from Martin Jarvis in Gloucester County, New Jersey.

On May 16, 1706 he sold 200 acres for 450£ to Rice Peters, a cordwainer, of Philadelphia.

On Febuary 10, 1708  he bought land from Roger Hawkins in Gloucester County, New Jersey.

On April 20, 1709 he sold land to Ezekiel Siddon, butcher, in Gloucester County, New Jersey.

On April 9, 1711 he sold land to Thomas Miller in Gloucester County, New Jersey.

On May 10, 1726 deed From James Parry in Bucks County.

Jacob, Sr. died in 1732 in Northampton Township, Bucks County. His will was dated August 26, and proved on October 9 , 1732. He mentioned his sons Jacob, William, and Abraham. It was witnessed by Robert Heaton, John B. Brock, and Daniel Brock.

Pennsylvania is one of the 13 original states and was originally founded in 1681 as a result of a royal land grant to William Penn, the son of the state's namesake.

....Jacob Coffing, Senr, who was in Pennsylvania as early as 1690, and died in Northampton Township, Bucks County, in 1732. The will of the latter, dated 26 August, and proved 9 October, 1732, names sons Jacob, William, and Abraham. In some records the name is spelled Coffin.
